Bar Endorsement Sows Hope for Vermont Legal Aid Plan
Vermont Bar Association will hear a request Friday to back a revised Judicare plan for free legal aid to the poor funded by federal and state sources. The watered down proposal now seeks 200 250000 dollars to serve about 20000 Vermont families, with a non profit corporation to govern the expanded services. A VBA study had criticized the original plan and the Legal Aid Committee is poised to oppose the measure. Also noted are pawnshop collateral trends in New York City and a speaker outlining missionary work by the Bres sler family in Mindanao and the Philippines, with slides planned for public sessions tonight and over the weekend.

Warning to Vermonters on Out-of-State Loan Firms
Vermont State Banking and Insurance Commissioner James Hunt warned residents near the New Hampshire and Massachusetts borders about borrowing from out-of-state small loan companies. He noted similar finance charges for small loans under $300 across states, but $300 to $600 loans run higher in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, with a $96 interest on a $600 loan there versus $80 in Vermont. He urged borrowers to consider disputes and refunds if using non-Vermont lenders.
