UPI reports 2500 US infantrymen landed on the central coast boosting American strength in Vietnam to 317,500. The troops are elements of the 4th Infantry Division, reinforcing the forces already deployed in the war zone.
The Security Council endorsed U Thant for another term as secretary general, despite his earlier pledge to quit at the end of the current General Assembly session. He expressed appreciation for the council's consensus and said he would give it serious consideration. Thant has criticized postwar power games and urged a broad approach to UN objectives.
North Viet Nam denounces the forthcoming Manila conference on Viet Nam as a smokescreen of peace and charges the United States with escalating the war by sending Marines into the demilitarized zone.
