Planners Debate Bennington County Land Use and Newspaper Tubes
Bennington planners reviewed preliminary land use maps toward a regional master plan and unanimously supported a statewide zoning study committee. They discussed the controversial Pennysaver newspaper tubes along county roads, with no action taken but plans to study legal aspects and report next month. A separate note: Dorset selectmen to hold a hearing on interim zoning.

Conservation Department Announces Coho Season
The department expects some of the 25 000 coho from Salmon River stock and 6 000 from Cat taragus Creek to return to their home tributaries by mid September. Biologists estimate about 10 percent will return, with the rest possibly going to other streams or falling prey to lampreys. Early 8 to 10 pound mature fish and potential returns from this year’s stocking of coho and chinook are noted, with initial catches likely near the stream mouths. Regulations rely on biology and other states’ Pacific salmon experience, Kilborne says, cautioning against expecting vast runs.
