Viet Cong fleeced refugees paying to flee Saigon

About 108 Vietnamese paid roughly 90,000 dollars in gold to Viet Cong officers for exit passage from Saigon in 1975. The refugees traveled by fishing boat to Vung Tau and eventually Singapore, narrowly escaping as the boat drifted after engine trouble. They were picked up by a Danish ship and later handed to U.S. authorities in Thailand. The crew reportedly claimed more bribes beyond gold, and a large group of passengers was jailed with unknown fates.
