Bennington caucus rejects 1% sales tax plan opposition voiced
About 40 attendees at the Bennington Democratic Caucus objected to Gov. Salmon's 1 percent sales tax proposal. State lawmakers questioned the plan as regressive while urging alternatives. Rep. Sauer won re election as town chairman and other committee posts were filled. All attendees were named to the town committee with a small bank balance reported.

Liberty Union Elects Niemiec Chair at Bennington Caucus
Liberty Union members held their first town caucus in Bennington Free Library basement electing Steve Niemiec to a two year term as town party chairman. The group denounced Gov. Salmon's proposed Vermont sales tax increase and adopted a statement opposing any sales tax hike as a stopgap measure. Bill Kelley named LU secretary, with Penny Larrison and Laina Gerrish to town committee posts and Gerrish to county committee pending recovery from surgery. The session started slowly with low turnout and late arrival of reporters and participants.

Eloise Weathers Cuba as Death Toll Grows
Eloise struck eastern Cuba with torrential rains as it weakened after landfall. The storm had already left 34 dead and nearly 12,000 homeless and caused over 50 million dollars in damage in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The National Hurricane Center said winds weakened to 75 mph and remained confined to a few squalls as Eloise moved inland.

Local man Harrington electrocuted in Pownal barn
Peter E. Harrington a 26 year old Bennington resident and mason died after a metal window frame on a barn being installed touched a high tension wire. He fell from scaffolding but officials say electrocution caused his death. He served in the Navy and Vietnam era and left a wife Patricia and three children. He is survived by his mother and siblings.
