Religion in America Opponents See Dangers in Prayer Amendment

Opponents warn that approving a school prayer amendment could alter the Bill of Rights by redefining church and state. A Cuyahoga Falls housewife leads a Citizens group pressing Congress to move the proposal from committee to the full House. The measure seeks to permit non-denominational prayer in public schools while guarding rights of nonparticipants, though critics fear forced registration of children and teachers’ beliefs. In Vermont, Jehovah’s Witnesses attend a regional conference in Newport with talks by church leaders. World Community Day planning meeting is set for St Peter’s Church, with Church Women United organizing events for Nov. 5.
