Chief Justice Warren E. Burger told judges and officials in Manchester that delays in disposing of newsworthy cases erode public confidence. He urged the American Bar to stop prolonged cases and called for trials within 60 days of indictment and appeals within 60 days, noting 98 percent of federal criminal cases are promptly disposed. The Vermont gathering at Equinox Hotel also heard that court administration will appoint executives for 11 circuits to speed disposition of trials.
