Old cars rolled into Bennington for the fifth annual Antique and Classic Car Meet. Over 140 gleaming vehicles, from Packards and Model Ts to LaSalles and a Rolls Royce, drew crowds despite hot humid weather at Mt Anthony Field Friday through Sunday.
Nine prison employees were found dead with throats slit as 1,000 National Guardsmen state troopers and sheriffs deputies stormed Attica State Prison to end a five day uprising. Forty year old prison, hostages, and inmates fought with tear gas and helicopter attacks.
UPI reports Senator Winston L. Prouty will be buried Wednesday in Newport after dying Friday in Boston at 65 from stomach cancer. A Newport mayoral start in 1938 began his 33 year political career. A funeral service is planned in Newport and burial in Pine Grove Cemetery. Stafford is expected to announce a bid for Prouty’s Senate seat, with special elections to follow and mourning declared statewide.
The Vermont attorney general has ordered a writ of execution for 50,000 against Pownal Tanning Co. to enforce a contempt fine from Judge Robert Larrow over failure to meet wastewater and discharge directives. The sheriff will may attach real estate if unpaid, with possible sale, while company may appeal or pay.
Vermont four state colleges will ask the legislature for 4.785 million in the next session, about 0.75 million more than Gov Davis recommended. They call the proposal bare boned to keep tuition at 775 for residents and 1500 for nonresidents, while approving a 5.5 million capital program for 1973 including gym projects and electrical and lighting work. A committee advised cooperation with the University of Vermont, with a final report due by December 1.
About 200 cars and trucks collided on the foggy M6 motorway near Warrington, England. Police report at least nine killed and more than 60 injured as crews battled fires and used blow torches to extract victims from wreckage, the scale of one of Britain’s worst crashes.
At Southern Vermont Orchards in Bennington and Pownal foreman Walter Atwood says the farm expects a strong season after last year’s losses from hail. About 36 Jamaican workers live on the orchard and pick apples for $6 per tub, with the crew staying through early November to harvest McIntosh, Northern Spy, and Golden Delicious varieties.
