Vatican Council to Consider Religious Liberty Doctrine

The fourth Vatican session in Rome opens September 14 with eleven agenda items. The key proposal declares religious liberty and rejects the idea that error has no rights, challenging suppressive practices in Catholic countries and signaling strong American episcopal support. The council also reviews a Jews document rejecting collective blame for crucifixion, while a major 126 page draft on the modern world draws attention though it offers few startling ideas. The marriage section omits birth control, deferring it to a Vatican commission.
