PSB Delays Decision On Vernon Financing

Conservationists won another critical round to review environmental effects of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corp plant at Vernon. The Public Service Board delayed any long term financing order for at least one week and continued Sept 10 hearings on Vermont Yankee’s petition to float 80 million in bonds and 15 million in preferred stock.

Bipartisan Appeal Urges Nixon To Seek Vietnam Cease-Fire

A cross party letter to President Nixon urges a standstill cease-fire in Vietnam and withdrawal of all foreign troops within a set period after the cease-fire. The letter came as the Senate defeated a motion to set February 29 1972 as a withdrawal deadline. It was signed by 14 senators including Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield and cited Paris talks as precedent for many proposals. The White House said objectives align with U.S. posi tion, though other side remains noncommittal.

U S Evidence Egypt Russia Violated Middle East Cease Fire

Washington sources say the United States has evidence that Egypt and Russia violated the Middle East cease-fire. The material concerns SA2 antiaircraft missiles in the Suez standstill zone and possible nighttime movement during Aug 7 8. State Dept declined comment and no action was named. Officials say violations may be less serious than Israel asserts and not derail peace talks.

Selectman Outlines Decade Capital Budget Plan

Bennington Selectman Chairman J Duncan Campbell unveiled a proposed 7.2 million capital improvements budget for the next decade. He cautioned that item costs are rough and priorities may shift amid board questions. The draft lists nine projects totaling seven million with a 2.16 million local share funded by bonds. The first item is 150 low cost housing units financed entirely by federal help.

Welfare deficit review eyed as AFNC caseload grows

New President Named By St. Joseph College

St Joseph College in Old Bennington named Rev Charles C Matusik CSC as its new president succeeding Sister Julia Marie SSJ who will remain treasurer and financial aid officer. Matusik previously served as Bridgeport provincial secretary and taught at Kings College Wilkes Barre and Notre Dame High School Bridgeport with extensive administrative and teaching roles. He was born February 19 1924 in Jamaica New York and is a Notre Dame and Fairfield University graduate. Appointment effective last Thursday.
