Falls Girl Murdered in Hoosick Falls Case

Mary Michele Herring, 21, was found slain in a Washington County field near Buskirk. David James Cadoret, 24, of Hoosick Falls, is charged with the pistol killing after a manhunt. Autopsy performed. Cadoret remanded to county jail without bond. Herring, a lifeguard, had been staying with her parents at Hedges Lake. Funeral services set for Thursday at Mahar Funeral Home and Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Senate Defeats End the War Amendment Vote 55 to 39

The Senate rejected a bid to end all Vietnam War financing and force troop withdrawal. The Hatfield McGovern plan would have halted funding by year end and set a withdrawal deadline, but received only 39 votes to 55. Nixon said withdrawals were already underway and deadlines risked stability.

Big Three Offer UAW Wage Hike In Record Package

DETROIT UPI The Big Three automakers GM Ford and Chrysler proposed a three year contract with the richest economic package in history. The offers include a 7 percent average pay rise and a 500 per month pension after 30 years, retirement at 60, while not changing the cost of living formula. The UAW seeks substantial pay hikes a $500 monthly pension after 30 years and no limit on COLA. Deadline for contracts is Sept 14 with a 50-50 chance of a settlement ahead.
