Senate To Start Debate Tuesday on Rights Bill
The Senate plans to bring up the House passed civil rights bill on Tuesday while the subcommittee version remains in committee. A filibuster is anticipated over the housing section, with opposition from Southern Democrats and Republicans. Senate leaders aim to move ahead after Labor Day, despite Dirksen’s stance against the housing provision. Other actions include a House-passed mining deduction bill and wage negotiations setting a $1.60 federal minimum in 1968, plus a safety measure giving the FDA authority to remove hazardous toys.
