Ninety Die As Britannia Plane Crashes In Yugoslavia

A Britannia Airways turbo-prop plane carrying 110 Britons on a charter to the Adriatic coast struck a tree while landing near Ljubljana airport and disintegrated in flames. Yugoslav authorities report 90 dead with 27 survivors, many injured, and the toll expected to rise. The wreck occurred shortly after midnight as the jet skimmed snow covered hills two miles from the airport.

Mouse Causes False Alarm At Rural Fire District

A pet mouse at Willow Road firehouse sparked a brief alarm when Brant Young chased it with a broom and kicked the alarm panel. Chief Norman Turgeon said the group shut off the siren after a half hour of circuit checks, and about a dozen firefighters still responded to a nonextant blaze.

U Thant Bows Out As Head of the U N

Secretary General Thant announced he will quit when his term ends November 3 and will not seek a second term. He cited frustration with the UN’s peacekeeping efficacy, especially in Vietnam, and urged the Security Council to choose a successor unfettered by his decision.

De Gaulle Urges U S to Withdraw From Viet Nam

In Phnom Penh French President Charles de Gaulle told the United States to pull out of Viet Nam. He said war would continue until Washington complies and praised Cambodia for neutrality. He called for troop withdrawal with a reasonable delay, warning Asia will not accept foreign rule.

Town Sisters Seek Added Extension in Grand List Filing

Viet War U S Death Toll Near Five Thousand

In Viet Nam the U S war dead rose toward 5,000 as weekly casualty reports show 687 American losses, including 87 KIA. Last week 599 wounded and one missing. Air and naval airpower continued bombing and interdiction along the 17th parallel with limited ground action reported.
