Dickey-Lincoln dam study weighs Maine costs benefits
Maine officials say the Dickey-Lincoln hydro project would cost the state over 114 million dollars in direct costs over 100 years while delivering flood control and other benefits totaling hundreds of millions. Discounting suggests net Maine gains of about 53 million, depending on interest rates. The project aims to supply part of New England's peak power, with a regional cost benefit cited by federal review. The Longley citizens committee will consider the project and advise the governor in December.

Pneumonia vaccine shows 100 percent success in trial
University of California researchers report a trial using an Eli Lilly developed vaccine immunized 77 black children with sickle cell anemia and 19 with spleen damage. The vaccine prevented pneumococcal pneumonia, though it does not guard against viral pneumonia. If confirmed, it could protect about 95 percent of pneumococcal infections and lead to universal immunization. Pneumonia remains a major killer in the United States with 25 000 annual deaths.
