Judge Hayes acquits Michael Martin in 1976 Cirelli murder

Superior Court Judge Thomas L. Hayes dismissed the first degree murder charge against Michael J. Martin, 23, of North Clarendon, acquitting him in the killing of Palace Hotel bar tender Harry Cirelli, 52, in Manchester on Oct. 5, 1976. The ruling cited the evidence as circumstantial and insufficient to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Bennington officials unite to map elderly care needs

A 36 member panel of federal state and local officials and health care workers met at Putnam Memorial Hospital to coordinate services for the elderly. They identified gaps in care, defined terms like congregate and supervised housing, and created committees to sustain the effort beyond the session, aiming to bypass slow federal and state actions and address nursing home bed shortages in Bennington.

Brush named selectman on third ballot for unexpired Morrissey term

Bennington selectmen appointed M. Lloyd Brush of 11 Corey Lane to fill the unexpired term of former GOP Selectman Gerald Morrissey who resigned Oct. 11. Brush, a Republican, won on the third ballot after two ties with Walter Noyes of H. M. Tuttle Co. Zwynenburg was eliminated after one vote. Discussion noted Noyes would likely miss some meetings due to Mason club duties and may or may not seek re-election next March.

Carter signals support for South Africa sanctions debate

U S agriculture chief tours Vermont town meeting

Morrissey Sr. resigns as Bennington Water Board chair

Gerald E. Morrissey resigns Tuesday from the Bennington Water Board chairmanship two weeks after his son left the board of selectmen. In a letter read by Selectman Lorraine Eastman Morrissey attacks Town Manager Louis C. Savelas as “sophomoric” and cites disenchanted governance.
