Tests Planned To Study Dam Environmental Effects In Maine
The Army Corps of Engineers will expand studies on the Dickey Lincoln hydroelectric project on the upper Saint John River Maine. Col Chandler said UMaine geologists will analyze mineral content and soil quality in the dam area and a consultant will plan wildlife loss mitigation during construction. Further vegetation and insect surveys will map the area to be flooded and findings will be released for public comment before the final impact statement next summer. Additional work will assess energy alternatives through the century including non New England power purchases. Environmentalists oppose the plan citing more than 80000 acres of timberland at stake while Sen Muskie backs the project for jobs and regional energy needs.
