Convention boycott hits Chicago convention revenue
Chicago, a major convention city, loses an estimated 15 million dollars in revenue due to a new tactic driving conventions away from states that have not ratified the ERA. Similar losses hit Miami and Las Vegas as 40 national groups join the boycott coordinated by the National Organization for Women. Illinois is among seven states rejecting ERA, with Chicago expected to miss about 14 million in potential business. The ERA must be ratified by 38 states by March 1979 to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
