Welfare Not Paying Enough for Nursing Home Care
The Vermont Nursing Home Association urged action after the Welfare Department refused Fairview Nursing Home Bennington permission to accept welfare patients. They cited two related events: Bishop De Goes briand Arnold Pavilion Burlington closure due to welfare payment inadequacy and a New England health experts conference concluding current payments cannot cover rising care costs. Statewide 1963 costs at $7.49 per patient far exceed the $5.98 paid by the state, creating bed shortages and placing patients in strained areas.
