Sartre Wins Nobel Prize Then Refuses Award
Jean-Paul Sartre, awarded the 1964 Nobel prize for literature, rejected the honor and its $52,500 tax free prize money. The Bennington Fire Department called in the state Fire Marshal to determine the cause of a blaze at Vermont Restaurant on 105 North St. Smoke filled the building but firefighters confined the fire to the upstairs rear section over the kitchen. damage estimated at 2000 to 2500 dollars. Maria's shoe repair shop next door also suffered some damage. Edward King notified the alarm from the Putnam Square firebox while a waitress evacuated patrons. Mutual aid procedures were used as a Rural Fire Department truck stood by at a village firehouse. The restaurant had a prior nonserious fire about a year and a half ago.

Stolen truck reported by Cleveland Heights business owner
Jack Garvin of suburban Cleveland Heights told police Monday his small truck was stolen from in front of his business establishment Protection Service Inc. in Cleveland. He reported the theft occurred while the vehicle was left unattended outside the premises. The incident is under investigation by local authorities.

William Rowe Dies In Woodford Crash
William G. Rowe, 40, of 234 Bradford St., Bennington, died in a crash on Vermont 9 in Woodford at about 4:30 a.m. He was ejected from a 1960 Rambler station wagon that left the road, struck an embankment, and rolled onto its roof. State police report the 104th highway fatality in Vermont for 1964. The body was taken to Mahar and Son Funeral Home.
