Ancient Gold Refinery Found At Sardis By Harvard Cornell
Archaeologists from Harvard and Cornell uncovered a 6th century B C gold refining workshop at Sardis in Turkey. The site yielded refined gold, cloaks of crucibles and tools, including 300 capels. The find, led by George M. Hanfmann and A Henry Detweiler, may reshape understanding of Lydia metallurgy and coinage. A fundraising exhibit Gods and Heroes opens Oct 29 in New York to support continued Sardis research.
