Apollo crew tours orbiting ship on TV during spaceflight

In a live Earth TV tour from orbit, astronauts Walter Schirra Donn Eisele and Walter Cunningham guided viewers through the Apollo command module. They described controls showed numbness from colds and shared jokes about ground control while addressing viewers including Harriet Eisele. The onboard crew discussed reentry ear pressure and ongoing orbital tests on the fifth day of a 163 orbit mission.

Bennington honors Cpl. Ward posthumously in state armory

Public ceremony at the Bennington State Armory honored Cpl. Forrest E. Ward who was killed in Vietnam on June 13. His mother Mrs. Hector J. Ward received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Medic Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and good conduct ribbon from Col. Joseph Bohnak on behalf of the Army Secretary.

Nightly commemoration led by Cpl Ward kin in Troy

A small memorial service was held for Cpl Ward with his sister Mrs Henry Buck Jr her husband and two children from Troy in attendance. The event marked a solemn remembrance night at the local commemoration ceremony.

New Junior High Eyed for MAUHS

Mt. Anthony Union High School directors were asked to consider a new junior high building to relieve overcrowding at MAUHS. The Building Needs Planning Committee reported the current junior high and high school near capacity and explored options including a longer school year and split sessions. No decision or date set for the next meeting.

Davis Promises School Support and Tax Reform

Republican governor candidate Deane C. Davis attracted Bennington voters with a pledge to boost state aid for local education to 40 percent, up from 30, and to overhaul the education funding formula to equalize costs among towns. He tied rising school costs to high property taxes and urged tax relief by shifting more burden to state funding while maintaining reasonable real estate taxes.

Paris sources say Le Duc Tho has flown to Hanoi to press Ho Chi Minh for a more flexible stance. Hanoi factions split between pro Soviet moderates seeking to break the deadlock and hardline pro Chinese advocates of full military action. Prison Head Defends Cummins Shooting Incident

Prison chief Victor Urban backed guards who fired birdshot at about 100 inmates during a cucumber-picking protest at Cummins prison farm. Twenty-three prisoners were slightly injured and one possibly blinded as authorities tried to end the sit-down strike over medical services.
