Washington UPI reports the dean of Senate Republicans urged action over Vietnam as Dean Rusk refused to push a UN confrontation with the Soviet Union. The item cites bipartisan frustration with policy delays and calls for tougher measures.
Ford Motor Co. announced a new proposal to the United Auto Workers as talks aim to end a 37 day walkout affecting 160,000 Ford workers. The UAW said the move shows progress though not enough equity for workers. The union presented a counter-offer, signaling a possible shift toward serious bargaining.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower told reporters in Gettysburg that critics of the Vietnam war overreach and urged moderation. He promoted more thinking, less talking, and urged examining all facts before forming public opinion. He planned light campaigning for the GOP in 1968 and hoped to play golf this winter. Mamie Eisenhower wished for his good health on his birthday.
In La Paz and Buenos Aires, Ernesto Che Guevara’s family questioned official claims he was killed in action and cremated. Roberto Guevara said he would not believe reports without seeing the corpse, while their father criticized conflicting notices of burial and cremation as a farce. President Barrientos confirmed cremation as the best course and promised a full official statement later.
Investigators ruled out several technical causes and explored sabotage as a possibility in the BEA Comet Mark IV crash off the Turkish coast. All 66 aboard died, including four Americans. Former Cypriot leader Col. Grivas traveled to Nicosia hours before. BEA officials noted sabotage could not be ruled out. RAF doctors assisted post mortems on Rhodes, where bodies were taken after rescue ships recovered them. Names include William T. Sherris of Fairfax Virginia and Marine Sgt Michael P. American jet bombers pounded Kep airfield near Hanoi for a third straight day, damaging runways and anti aircraft batteries while reports say MIGs were moved to dispersed fields. Other raids hit Haiphong area targets, bridges, roads, and two Haiphong shipyards, with newer aircraft losses disclosed.
In Winooski at a Vermont Democrats dinner UPI reports Postmaster General Lawrence F. O'Brien urged Gov. George Romney to clarify his Vietnam position. O'Brien warned Romney and Republicans face a tough uphill fight in 1968 and noted Johnson’s Vietnam policy as the responsible path for the country.

Gov. Philip Hoff urged Keep Vermont Beautiful to support scenic corridors legislation at the association’s annual meeting. The plan would designate highway sections where commercial signs are banned, with a pilot “Logo” sign program tested on interstates 89 and 91 under U S Bureau of Public Roads approval. A House committee has endorsed 15 potential corridors in principle.
