Nixon expands campaign into the solid South

United Press International reports Nixon visits Atlanta tapping the solid South voters in a one day swing. McGovern trails in 11 former Confederate states with Texas as his only potential bright spot. Nixon plans a Peachtree Street motorcade and a reception for campaign officials. McGovern vows to end the Vietnam War in 90 days and accuses Nixon of surrendering prisoners. Agnew praises curbing inflation while Wallace gains strength in Alabama. Schmitz denounces Nixon as corrupt and totalitarian.

Hijacker wounded by German police in Lufthansa incident

Frankfurt police said hijacker Friedrich Schuetz 30, described as a soldier of fortune, was out of danger after two detectives shot him as he demanded a car and four hostages. He threatened to blow up the Lisbon to Frankfurt flight carrying 58 passengers and showed a suspected bomb liquid. Lufthansa and police found no political motive.

Accord seen in near future between the two Germanys

First American GI killed in new fighting near Saigon

In the Saigon area the first American service member died in the current Communist assault near the capital. A second American was wounded in an ambush on Highway 1. Heavy fighting persisted north of Saigon as government forces fought to eject Viet Cong from hamlets along Highway 13.
