Park Board Allows Mother's Handmade Tombstones in Glendale

Des Moines Park Board granted an exception to city policy to place two concrete headstones for infant graves Benjamin James and Christa Ann Frederick at Glendale Cemetery. The moved markers were created by Cynthia Frederick, a 21 year old mother, who could not afford commercial stones and supported by her Army husband stationed in West Germany. The board noted many infant graves remain unmarked for financial reasons and reversed an earlier committee stance that sought to keep only granite or bronze markers.
