Washington and West Germany push Allies toward joining a proposed NATO nuclear fleet amid reports they may act alone if needed. Diplomats doubt the United States would launch the force as a two power operation due to risks of provoking Soviet fears.
Former Secretary of State Dean Acheson rejects Senator Barry Goldwater's call for a conclave of NATO founders to fix the alliance's problems. Vermont could gain federal matching funds of about six hundred forty six thousand dollars for educational television if state appropriations rise. John J. Hurley, deputy assistant to the undersecretary, said an increased limit on ETV aid is expected late this year or early next year. Vermont now faces a three hundred thousand dollar cap and has no ETV system. Hurley cautioned he cannot commit funds but noted Vermont’s chances look favorable after meetings with University of Vermont officials.
