American pilot killed by Communist sniper in Vietnam
A U.S. Army helicopter pilot was shot dead by a sniper 360 miles north of Saigon as his craft was forced down in battle. Officials said the pilot died of a chest wound after stepping from the helicopter. Three other American crew members were rescued. The incident brought American fatalities in Vietnam to 202 since 1961. Premier Nguyen Khanh warned of possible bombing of China and North Vietnam if Communist support to Viet Cong grows. The U.S. has intensified air raids against North Vietnam, while Khanh cautioned against hasty retaliation and diplomacy-heavy decisions.

A Richmond truck driver Ralph H. LaPlante escaped serious injury when braking hard at a Seminary Avenue and West Road intersection to avoid a vehicle, sending a 78 foot concrete beam into the cab.
