Wholesale prices dropped 1.8 percent in September led by sharp declines in meat eggs fruit vegetables and other foods. Farm product prices fell 6 percent the largest drop since February 1948 while processed foods and feeds fell 6 percent an all time monthly record.
Austrian Interior Minister Otto Roesch outlined a plan to rapidly move Soviet emigrants through Austria to Israel. The approach would coordinate Moscow arrivals with Austria to place travelers on planes to Israel, bypassing transit camps such as Schoenau Castle. Kreisky agreed to close the camp to save hostages, a move Eban condemned at the UN.
