The Dodge Index shows August contraction activity at its lowest for the year with total future-work contracts at 4.30 billion and an index of 139, down 8 from July. Residential contracts fell sharply while nonresidential and nonbuilding sectors strong gains offset only partly the housing slowdown, as credit tightness spreads to stores and related markets.
