Vermont Poets End Long Run at Manchester Bookshop
Two of Vermont’s best known booksellers, Margaret and Walter Hard, retire after 36 years of running the Johnny Appleseed Bookshop in Manchester. Frederic F. Taylor, 28, of Winhall, takes over, plans to expand rental library and mail order, keep a literate atmosphere, and invite Walter Hard daily. The Hards’ farewell notes emphasize community ties, literary meetings, and hopes their successor preserves the shop’s spirit while arranging Walter’s papers with the University of Vermont for a lasting collection.
