Bay State stores crowd first Sunday reopening amid Blue Law repeal

Massachusetts retailers saw crowded aisles as first Sunday sales after Blue Law exemption for the Christmas season spurred shoppers to buy gifts. Larger malls drew big crowds while smaller shops felt pressure from competition. New Hampshire malls also benefited as shoppers crossed the border for no sales tax. Officials anticipate 2.5 to 3 million in sales tax revenue on about 120 million in increased holiday commerce. A Bennington fundraiser at Price Chopper invites shoppers to donate 5 percent of their grocery-stub totals to the Bennington Tutorial Center on Nov 29, with up to 1,000 participants.
