18 Hole Championship Golf Course Planned at Shaftsbury Farm

Bennington area leaders unveil a plan to convert 150 acres of former Double T Farms into an 18 hole public golf course. Architect Rowland Armacost and Merritt Hewitt Jr plan a Dec 9 meeting at North Bennington Elementary to outline financing and site changes including clubhouse from the former dairy barn and nearby maintenance buildings. The project totals 408000 with funds from banks stock sales and intrastate investors, while federal loans are unavailable.

Ex POW says he made propaganda to aid the enemy

Sgt. Jon Sweeney the first U S serviceman charged with aiding the enemy in Vietnam said he made propaganda tapes for the North Vietnamese to win release and return home He told CBS News he signed statements and recorded tapes to get out and that other prisoners did likewise He could face the death penalty if court martialed and Marines say he deserted after being left to die two years ago.

GM recalls 4800 early 1971 GM cars for throttle defect

General Motors asks owners of about 4800 early production 1971 model cars to return them for a throttle linkage correction. The recall covers six cylinder Chevrolets Camaros Novas Chevelles El Caminos Pontiac LeMans Firebirds F 85 Oldsmobiles and Buick Specials. A misaligned control rod could hold the throttle partially open, making it hard to slow or stop the car. Parts will be replaced at GM expense. no accidents have been reported.

Hickel aides fired as White House reshapes Interior team

Six aides to former Interior Secretary Walter Hickel were fired by a White House aide after about two hours notice. The group included the executive assistant, the assistant secretary for fish and wildlife and parks, and the Commissioner of Fish and Wildlife. Fireings followed Hickel’s Wednesday dismissal by President Nixon.

Pentagon confirms air strikes near Hanoi during POW raid

The Pentagon acknowledged air strikes near Hanoi during the Son Tay prison raid and did not rule out Hanoi’s claim that bombs landed north of the 19th parallel. Defense officials said about a dozen Shrike missiles targeted radar sites to suppress anti aircraft fire and troop movements.
