Walter J. Hickel, abruptly dismissed by President Nixon from his post as Interior Secretary, will speak out next week on his ouster. The former cabinet member faces public questions about the removal and the administration’s handling of the firing.
United Press International reports the Thanksgiving period shows at least 183 traffic deaths by 10 a.m. EST, with totals across California Michigan Ohio New York and other states, while the National Safety Council estimates the toll may end near 670. The piece also covers President Nixon dismissing Alaska Governor Walter Hickel, naming Rogers Morton to replace him and reactions from lawmakers and conservationists.
Bolivian artist Mendoza disguised as a priest lunged with a one-foot kris at the Pope as aides shielded him. Marcos and security wrestled the assailant. Pope Paul VI continued a demanding Asian tour despite minor bloodstains and fatigue after more than 32 hours of travel.
Bennington town faced questions over a nepotism policy when Ronald Higgins, son of Selectman Joseph E. Higgins, was named town accountant at $10 000 a year. Minutes from Sept 17 1968 showed a strict policy against hiring relatives, yet private meetings and pressure from Selectman Higgins preceded the public ad. Town staff and other selectmen expressed shock at how the appointment was pushed, including early letters to Higgins’ army commander and undisclosed letters before full board approval. Four East Germans including two doctors and a scientist jumped from the Cuba-bound Volker F. Reineschaft eight miles off Big Pine Key and were picked up by a 22-foot charter boat hired by the brother of one jumper. Coast Guard and FBI took them to Key West for interrogation.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover testified that a militant group named East Coast to Save Lives planned to kidnap a highly placed government official and demand an end to bombings in Southeast Asia. The Berrigan brothers were named as leaders. Hoover described the group as Catholic clergy and supporters aiming to disrupt federal operations in Washington. The hearing noted tightened security and a request for 14.1 million dollars to fund 1,000 agents and 702 clerks.
