Vermont Republicans won sweeping majorities in both houses amid reapportionment, taking 115 seats in the House and 24 in the Senate from Democrats. Voters exceeded 100,000, with Republicans seen carrying the day as Democrats face a crushing setback and Gov Hoff’s agenda faces a stalled legislature.
In Bennington County Tuesday voters favored Republican challengers Allan Rangney Jr. and Salvatore Santarcangelo for state senate, delivering decisive gains across the county while incumbent Robert M. Wilson failed to mount a comeback. Angney led county totals with 3795 votes, Santarcangelo 3487, as turnout favored GOP across small towns.
U.S. military reports 240 Americans killed in action last week in Viet Nam, near Le Drang Valley and Central Highlands, with enemy losses estimated at 2,262 to 4,000. The week marks the highest toll yet, surpassing Korean War weekly averages and approaching totals for earlier years. General Westmoreland called the battle a gain for North Vietnamese forces.
Washington reports Beijing is reportedly evacuating non essential residents from Canton and other cities along the southern frontier in Kwangsi Kwantung and Yunnan. The move aims to reduce civilian casualties from potential U S air strikes and may signal a long grim struggle.
In Bulawayo, Rhodesia, black workers failed to sustain a general strike as employers issued work or be fired edicts. Police used tear gas on a protest in Mpopoma Township where a demonstrator was killed. The Vermont General Assembly seats were filled in special elections Tuesday. Winners include Allen and Caracciola in District 3 subdistrict 1 and My ers and Lillie in subdistrict 2, Wallace and Van Santvoord in subdistrict 3, Collins and Whitney in District 32, Kanyon in District 42, Nelson in District 57, Doyle in District 49, and Lefevre and Mann in District 25. Rensselaer County will establish a public defender office and hire Thomas J. O Connor as the first defender at 10000 annually. The post begins December 1 to meet state law deadlines, with a budget of 18900 plus 5500 for an assistant and 3400 for a stenographer. A dissenting vote questioned the funding level, while others called the plan a necessity. The county Bar Association had urged an assigned counsel approach, which was previously considered but rejected.
