Mobutu, a Congo general, ousts President Kasavubu and Premier Kimba, suspends parts of the constitution, and proclaims a five year rule with emergency powers. Sleeman Named Asst Superintendent For Bennington District

George A. Sleeman, a Bennington High School veteran, is named assistant superintendent in charge of pupil personnel services for the Bennington South Supervisory Union. He will assume July 1 and oversee student guidance, health and psychological services, and nursing staff. Sleeman, hospitalized with appendicitis today, will lead six to eight full-time counselors and work closely with seniors. The board approved a $12,681 salary after Supt. Howard Kelley recommended the appointment following Allan Heaths retirement. Sleeman is a Bennington graduate with a Castleton State College BA and a master’s degree.

Four Barre Residents Killed In Thanksgiving Plane Crash

Four Vermonters returning from a Hartford Thanksgiving gathering were killed when their single engine Beech Bonanza crashed near Barre Montpelier Airport in a heavy snowstorm. Pilot Lawrence Laffountain 51 and his wife Hazel 47 plus son Richard 23 and daughter in law Lois 19, all of Barre, died. State and federal investigators joined the probe as a snowbound, near zero visibility scene hindered searchers for hours.

Rhodesian Premier Labels Explosive Blow as Sabotage

Rhodesian Premier Ian Smith called an early morning explosion that wrecked a power pylon and cut copper belt supplies in northern Zambia sabotage possibly by Communists or others. The blast on the Kariba Dam to Kitwe line disrupted copper production. power was restored in parts by noon, with rationing in the affected Zambian area and hopes of full restoration within 24 hours.

Court Rules On Instructor Regulations In New York

The New York Court of Appeals ruled that the State Motor Vehicle Department may set educational requirements for driving instructors. It holds the department may require 30 hours of driver training and traffic safety instruction for licensure or license renewal, against a challenge by privately operated driving schools claiming excess authority under a 1963 law.

Hoff Accepts Blame for Democratic Defeat in Election

BurlingtonGovernor Philip Hoff said he bears responsibility for Democrats losing big in Tuesday's elections. He was abroad on a Far East goodwill trip and Europe on the way home, missing key campaigning.
