Bennington youth, trooper die in Shaftsbury shootout
A Bennington 16 year old Timothy Mayer was killed and state trooper John G. Fagerholm 23, of Shaftsbury critically injured after a silent burglar alarm call at a private home off East Road. Mayer’s brother Joseph Mayer, 21, and Keith Harrington were later arrested.

Old First Church Barn Fire Suspected Arson
In Old Bennington a second fall fire badly damaged the century old Old First Church barn. Fire Chief Erwin Mattison called the blaze suspicious while State Fire Marshal David Sargent and Arson Squad investigators examined the scene. Police Chief Thomas Marcotte assisted as authorities sought clues to the fire, which occurred near the Bennington Battle Monument and the church parsonage.
