Conservative radicals raise women's status in minyan
The Conservative Movement's 1973 ruling allowing counting women in the minyan is not binding locally, with about 40 percent of Conservative congregations counting women or granting aliyahs. Rabbis like Rabbi Rubnick in Pittsfield say attitudes are shifting, though some members resist. The change follows broader shifts in education and religious practice, including bat mitzvahs, and is seen as expanding women's role within Conservative Judaism.
