Town Listers Seek Impartial Review
The Bennington Board of Listers calls for an impartial investigation committee to review listers records and listing practices. All town taxing bodies are to appoint three citizens plus their attorneys and Bennington County State's Attorney to join. The move follows a prior public meeting by the Bennington Taxpayers Association which accused lax bookkeeping and biased listings favoring industry over homeowners.

An unidentified young man robbed DeMarco’s Sporting Goods at 9:45 am, taking $54 cash, an automatic pistol, two revolvers, ammo, and forcing clerk Joan Lasher to reveal the cash register. He fled front entrance in unknown vehicle or on foot. Lasher beschrieb suspect as 20s, dark hair, brown jacket, boots, paper bag. DeMarco and assistant unaware until Lasher phoned.

Bus Plunge Into Icy River Kills 25 In Belgrade Scene
Belgrade reports a bus carrying 40 to 50 mostly women sideswiped a gasoline truck and plunged into the Saba River. Twenty-five bodies were recovered and more than 11 survived. Authorities arrested both drivers as searchers scoured the river, with road blocks set on key routes. Most passengers were Yugoslavs.

Jewels Stolen From Miami Penthouse in Police Bandit Heist
Two masked gunmen robbed hotel magnate Carling Dinkler and his wife in their Palm Bay Club penthouse of an estimated 350000 in jewels. The bandits bound the couple, ransacked the suite, and left after kissing Mrs. Dinkler’s ring finger. Det. Capt. Huttoe likened the raid to a recent Willis Du Pont robbery. The Dinklers, married since 1939, have four children and two grandchildren.

LBJ says bombing halt won’t force peace in Vietnam
President Johnson told reporters a pause in bombing North Vietnam would not bring negotiations or peace. He said Hanoi’s intransigence and rejection of earlier proposals show a pause would mislead and weaken the U.S. position. Ben Mont Plans to Hold Line Despite Layoffs
Ben Mont Papers division president George H. Phreaner told The Banner there are no plans to shut the Bennington plant. He expects production and sales to improve next year after layoffs reducing staff from 300 400 to about 180 200, with full normal capacity by February. The plant faced inventory pressures and a delayed 835000 loan from the Vermont Industrial Building Authority, but Phreaner remains optimistic as a major competitor Denison Company exits the market aiding Ben Mont’s position in New England.

In Valatie New York a mother Laura Hagadone age 41 and five of her 13 children died in a two family home fire. Two other children and eight members of another family were injured while fleeing. The fire started in the kitchen when a kerosene stove exploded.
