Alfalfa compound boosts crop yields in field trials
Michigan State University scientists report field tests this summer showing trace amounts of triacontanol, a natural alfalfa derivative, raising yields in navy beans, sweet corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, radishes, and asparagus by 8 to 63 percent. Researchers caution results vary with environment and timing, with ongoing trials and interest from industry.

Birds detect unseen infrasound from distant weather and seas
Birds can sense infrasound too low for humans, generated by wind, storms, weather fronts, ocean waves and earthquakes. The Vermont Institute of Natural Science notes infrasound travels thousands of miles with little loss of power, allowing a bird over western New York to sense New England ocean breakers, Adirondack winds, and an advancing Lake Ontario storm.

Amish show higher milk yield per acre with lower energy use
A study led by Warren A. Johnson finds Old Order Amish in central Pennsylvania produce 4 percent more milk per acre than neighboring farms while using 83 percent less energy. Differences across states reflect soil and landscape. Nebraska and Illinois Amish vary in tech use and productivity. The researchers caution energy shortages could favor labor and efficiency if key inputs stay available.
