IRT reverses tax exemption ban for groups suing in public interest

The I R S reversed its stance on public interest litigation by granting tax exempt status to organizations that sue in the public interest. Commissioner Randolph W. Thrower announced guidelines allowing broad public benefit litigation while resuming reviews of new exemption requests. The move ends weeks of controversy as conservation, consumer protection and other groups applauded the stance.

Chile Breaks OAS Quarantine, Reopens Cuba Ties

President Salvador Allende announced full relations with Cuba breaking the OAS quarantine. Chile will establish diplomatic consular and cultural ties while calling the sanctions illegal and unjust. He noted Mexico and Jamaica previously recognized Cuba and pledged further links with Communist China and other states.

CVPS Denied Exemption for Vermont Power Line Project

GOSHEN CVPS failed to obtain an environmental exemption for a 46-kilovolt line from Rawsonville to Stratton via Winhall. The Vermont Environmental Board required a district permit before stringing, halting right of way clearing and prompting potential appeals or court action if denied. If built, the line would serve Stratton ski area, with opposition from Winall residents and selectmen.

Mistrial Declared in Barre Robbery Case After Juror Conflict

Bennington District Court Judge John P. Morrissey declared a mistrial in the James W. Robertson case after five days of testimony. The state attorney Neil S. Moss was found to have a close acquaintance with a juror, prompting the halt of proceedings.
