Mohawk Airlines strike shuts down flights nationwide
Mohawk Airlines, Utica based and the nation’s fourth largest regional carrier, faced a 396 pilot walkout by ALPA at 12:01 a.m. EST after 12 months of wage and benefits talks. The strike halted more than 450 daily flights and furloughed about 2,500 workers as executives defended management’s stance. Pickets appeared at several Mohawk airports while Executive Airlines of Boston arranged 18 extra flights to move stranded passengers.

Eight oil workers killed in dynamite van explosion
At least eight Pan American Oil Co. employees died when a crane on a moving truck struck high voltage lines causing sparks that detonated a dynamite laden van. The blast ripped apart the van and severed a passenger compartment. Five victims were named as David K. Denadel, Robert J. Kane, and W. J. Fowler among others. Rescue efforts were hindered by darkness and cold as crewsworked to recover remains in a field near Tulsa.
