U.S. envoys snub Soviet Revolution anniversary

With White House approval, the State Department ordered top Washington and Moscow diplomats to skip the 53rd anniversary celebration of the Russian Revolution to protest Russia’s refusal to release two American generals. Only Richard Davies was designated to attend the Soviet embassy reception in Washington.

UAW GM talks inch toward settlement deny imminent

UAW head Woodcock told delegates a settlement is not imminent as talks near a national bargain end. He urged local settlements to aid a national accord and warned of strike benefits ending by Nov. 30. Cabinet officials attended, while observers noted movement toward an agreement.

Nevada district attorneys change by laws, officers lose

The Nevada District Attorneys Association changed its bylaws last September to allow a January election of officers. In Tuesday’s election the president, vice president, and secretary-treasurer all failed to win reelection.

Pell appeals to Hanoi to permit POW contact

United Nations dispatch reports Sen. Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island urging North Vietnam to allow contact with U S prisoners of war. Pell, part of the U S delegation at the General Assembly, called it a simple international responsibility to respond to Thant and the Red Cross and allow camp inspections.

Bombs Kill One in Tel Aviv Bus Station

Two Arab guerrilla bombs exploded at Tel Aviv's main bus station injuring 34 and killing a man. Police restrained mobs as shrapnel wounded many travelers minutes before Golda Meir returned from overseas. Israel blamed guerrillas and vowed not to renew peace talks under U.N. envoy Gunnar.

Rescuers find 14 survivors of Caribbean Mist shipwreck

Fourteen of 18 crew members aboard the 268 foot vessel Caribbean Mist were rescued after a night in 25 foot seas off Morehead City North Carolina. Five survivors were found in the Atlantic in life jackets and nine others on a raft. Coast Guard air sea search continued for four missing including the captain. The ship was en route from the Guianas to Baltimore with bauxite when it sank during a winter storm.

U S sues GM to notify owners on pickup wheel defect

The government sues General Motors under the 1966 Auto Safety Act seeking to force GM to notify about a suspected wheel rim defect on 200,000 three quarter ton pickups from 1960 to 1965 and to seek $400,000 in damages. Ralph Nader had claimed design flaws and the safety bureau and Justice Department press for owner notifications and enforcement actions.

U S launches new high spy satellite for long range alerts

At Cape Kennedy a large 1800 pound satellite is launched to detect infrared radiation from rising rockets and provide nearly 30 minutes warning of a long range missile attack. It will surveil Russia and Red China for treaty violations and support NORAD with quicker alerts than ground radar, then move to an orbital station above the Indian Ocean.
