Benn View Motel Fire Destroys Units in Bennington

A blaze at Benn View Motel early today destroyed two units an office and living quarters and heavily damaged several rooms. Four people including the manager and a Bennington College student escaped as flames from the basement followed an explosion. No injuries reported. The fire was controlled about 1 1/2 hours after 4 10 am call. Fire crews from several towns assisted. Loss pegged at 165000 with substantial smoke and water damage. All four evacuees checked into a local motel.

Halloween candy kills 53 year old boy in Detroit

A five year old boy, Kevin Tostin, died after eating Halloween candy laced with heroin in Detroit. He fell into a coma after trick-or-treating on Halloween and was not revived at Children’s Hospital. Autopsy awaited to confirm cause, with heroin-narcotic overdose cited by doctors.

Catamount and County banks blocked by Justice Dept suit

The U S Justice Department filed suit in Brattleboro to halt a planned merger of Catamount National Bank of North Bennington and County National Bank of Bennington, arguing the consolidation would violate the Clayton Antitrust Act by reducing competition and increasing concentration in Bennington’s banking market.
