Unique NES project offers Springfield youth a chance toward college

In Springfield a three year old program by the Northern Education Service NES provides tutoring and cultural exposure to hundreds of disadvantaged youths. Founded by four men including Robert Hughes the effort grew from 50 learners to over 700 with 300 more as drop ins. The program houses seven centers, partners with colleges and schools, and relies on volunteers to fund scholarships and summer camps while expanding beyond tutoring into broader community services. Federal interest from the Office of Economic Opportunity supports replication elsewhere. Budgets face strain as NES competes for funds alongside two other anti poverty groups.
