U S Navy aircraft crossed into Communist China from North Vietnam during a mission near Kep 30 miles northeast of Hanoi before returning to its carrier. Pentagon noted no details on the incident and cited a prior May 15 event.
Thousands of Marines invaded the DMZ capturing Hill 117 near Con Thien as heavy fighting raged along the Laos border. U S forces repelled North Vietnamese assaults in the Central Highlands near Pleiku, with 92 enemy killed and seven Americans dead. Navy ships exchanged fire with Communist batteries while a Skyraider was shot down, marking another day of intense combat.
Egypt rejected a U S demand for free passage through the Aqaba blockade and accused Washington of backing Israeli aggression.
