Personal Problems Motivate Defection of Major to Cuba
UPI reports Major Richard H. Pearce 36, a Vietnam veteran with top secret clearance, defected to Cuba claiming reasons of conscience after a broken marriage and separation from his young son Richard Jr. He fled from Key West in a private plane with his son, later landing in Havana and requesting asylum. The Army confirmed all classified files were inventoried and accounted for. Pearce had been an aide to Lt. Gen. Thomas W. Dunn at Ft. Sam Houston and was described as a conscientious officer and 100 percent Army by colleagues. He was on 13 day leave when he left Texas and picked up his son from his former wife’s home in Houston. his father asserts the move was to gain custody and not defection.
