Thomas L. Hayes of Fair Haven announced at a Montpelier luncheon news conference that he will continue as a Republican gubernatorial candidate. He spoke despite Shelburne businessman Richard A. receiving an overwhelming unofficial endorsement from party figures.
Education Commissioner Gibboney notes about 20 Vermont towns including Arlington forfeited 84200 in Elementary and Secondary Education Act funds. He cites 87 percent of the 1.8 million allocated for programs aiding educationally and economically deprived children has been used, with larger losses listed for several towns. Snelling beats Hayes at GOP convention as Hayes contemplates a September primary bid.
New England Telephone Co. sues the International Brotherhood of Telephone Workers for 1.25 million dollars over a nine day strike. The firm also files an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB alleging bad faith bargaining and mass picketing. A cable cut in Burlington, Massachusetts disrupted service to several businesses and up to 200 telephones. IBTW counters with unfair labor practice charges as mediators press for a settlement amid stalled talks across New England.
London reports both seamen led by William Hogarth of the National Union of Seamen and shippers’ Ford Geddes reject concessions as Prime Minister Harold Wilson proclaims a national emergency. Parliament will ratify 35 measures empowering naval action and controls on food, fuel, docks, and transport, valid for one month.
In Saigon militants and about 400 Buddhist monks and nuns demonstrated against U.S. aid to Premier Ky. Police threatened tear gas as students tried to approach Ky at a congress. Ky said elections for a constituent assembly would be held in September.
A spokesman for 83,000 real estate brokers testified against a federal ban on housing discrimination, arguing it infringes on liberty and harms race relations. Alan L. Emlen of NAREB labeled the proposal an intrusion into property owners rights, opposing compelled contracts in housing sales or rentals.
The Public Service Board says a public good order allowing Vermont New England Power Corp to import low cost Canadian power is final with no appeal filed to the Vermont Supreme Court. CVPS, VELCO, and Green Mountain Power opposed the cert, with potential appeals by some firms noted.
GARDEN CITY NY Governor Nelson A Rockefeller indicated support for a 1968 Republican ticket led by Governor George Romney with Senator Jacob Javits as running mate. Speaking at a Long Island fund raiser Rockefeller, who said he is out of the presidential race, praised Romney and Javits and noted growing GOP sentiment for their joint future.
In Saigon, a U.S. embassy report says an unidentified American soldier on a military gasoline truck fired at a Buddhist crowd outside Vien Hoa Dao pagoda. A Vietnamese regional militia member, Nguyen Van Ngoc, 28, died after being hit while riding his bicycle.
Armed Forces Minister Raul Castro declared Cuba will increase aid to national liberation movements in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, calling them the Achilles heel of Yankee imperialism. He spoke at the funeral of Luiz Ramirez Lopez, a sentry his regime says was killed by a U S Navy bullet at Guantanamo. The U S halted refugee flights to Cuba temporarily, with Swiss officials saying flights should resume around week’s end.
Paris reports French Veterans Minister Alexandre Sanguinetti accused the United States of silence on NATO reform. De Gaulle will remove French troops from NATO command July 1 while keeping political membership. About 26,000 Allied personnel and NATO HQ staff are slated to move out of France, signaling a bid to show allegiance to Western nations amidst friction.
