Vermont Republicans endorsed Richard Snelling for governor at a Saturday convention, with Hayes facing a Tuesday decision on whether to stay in the race. Hayes, Fair Haven native and Prouty aide, won 26 percent and may withdraw if unable to fund a viable primary. Snelling won 431 to 152 votes.

In Saigon a Vietnamese soldier was killed by a bullet from a US military gasoline truck driven by a Vietnamese assistant. A Buddhist led mob overturned and burned two American vehicles unconnected with the shooting, prompting fresh anti American violence in the city.

Public Health Nurses Threaten Citywide Shutdown Over Pay

About 75 percent of New York City public health nurses resigned effective 12 01 a m as a demonstration for a 20 percent raise matching hospital staff. Only eight centers saw nurses report for duty. emergency services would remain but most clinics would close, impacting 1.3 million children and hundreds of facilities. Mayor Lindsay insisted on a smaller raise while talks remained broken off.

Britain Declares Emergency Over Seamen Strike

Famed Author W R Hard Dies In Manchester Vermont

Walter Rice Hard, 84, a poet of Vermont and its people, veteran columnist, former Vermont legislator, and longtime proprietor of a Manchester drugstore, died May 3 at Putnam Memorial Hospital Bennington. He wrote Fouls and Base Hits for the Manchester Journal and later Hard Lines and Old Times for the Rutland Herald, and co ran the Johnny Appleseed Bookshop with his wife for over 30 years.
