North Shire Youth Center to Open in Red Barn Venue
Aimed at youths aged 12 to 18 considered too old for hopscotch, the North Shire Youth Center is set to open in the Red Barn at Ethan Allen Community College, with Fridays and Saturdays from 7 30 p.m. to midnight. Volunteers and students staff the center with activities planned including pool and ping pong, outdoor games, and field trips using the Manchester Child Development Center bus. The project is run by a 15 member board of directors with eight students and seven adults, and a weekly in service by Dave Schroedel from Bennington YIC. Community support appears positive as the Hoosick Memorial Day Parade and local events underscore engagement. The center will host a preview dance tomorrow night from 7 30 p.m. to midnight featuring Coco and the Lonesome Road Band.

Rupert Pawlet Vote on Sending Students to New York High School
Voters in Rupert and Pawlet will decide on June 16 whether to designate Granville High School in New York as the district’s receiving high school. If approved, the district with no local high school would owe only tuition for students attending Granville, with current options between Granville and Vermont schools. New York tuition is lower due to greater state aid. Granville charges $700 next year versus $1,700 at Burr and Burton Seminary and Arlington Memorial High in Vermont.

Anniversary Honors for Ayer Couple at Mt Anthony Club
Mr and Mrs Thomas Ayer of Harvest Hill Road Shaftsbury were honored May 17 at Mt Anthony Country Club for their 35th wedding anniversary. Relatives and friends from surrounding area New York Florida and Michigan attended. School will charge 1275. Rupert school directors will hold a special meeting today to consider warning a school district meeting on the designation of Salem High School in New York as the high school for the district. Tuition there next fall will be 500. Burr and Burton Headmaster Houghton D Pearl said today that only three or four BBS students will be affected if all three towns vote to designate New York high schools. He added that Burr and Burton actually favors these moves as those three towns will no longer have to be included in future planning for Burr and Burton. Negotiations have been completed between Pawlet school directors and the Pawlet Education Association over teacher contracts for the coming school year. The two-year contract, covering seven full-time and two part-time teachers, includes a base pay of 7000 for teachers, with bachelors degrees and a second year salary of 7366. Added to the contract is a tuition reimbursement for two courses a year and an increase in the travel allowance from 10 cents per mile to 15 cents.
