Will It Be Tom or Dick At GOP Convention

BARRE Vermont. The first Republican nominating convention in 50 years is set for Saturday at the Barre Municipal Auditorium. Delegates from across the state will unofficially endorse candidates for governor and other offices, with the major contest focusing on the gubernatorial nomination between Thomas L. Hayes and Richard Snelling. Hayes says he will stay in the race if he can win about 30 percent of the votes, while Snelling promises to withdraw if he fails to secure a majority. Observers see a clear split within the party as the convention approaches.

Milne Convicted of Fraud in Barre Vermont Trial Verdict

Living Costs Rise Again In April

The Labor Department reports a 0.4 rise in the consumer price index in April driven by higher costs for phone calls mortgages used cars and shoes while food prices eased. The year to year rise reaches 2.9 percent and purchasing power of the average factory worker declines by 35 cents per week.

Draft inequities prompt look at Selective Service

Washington notes that only about four of ten registrants will wear a uniform this month highlighting Selective Service inequities. Defense Secretary McNamara proposes two-year civilian service for non draftees, while Congress debates abolishing the draft for a voluntary force.
