A general alarm fire destroyed most of the four story former Aetna Mills building at 102 Second Avenue in Troy New York early Sunday. The 85 year old brick structure burned after 2 a.m. with flames reaching 200 feet high and embers roaming nearby roofs. Firefighters evacuated about 30 families and kept the blaze contained by rain and wind, bringing it under control by about 5 a.m. crews remained until 2:30 p.m.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk forcefully defended the United States military role in Southeast Asia during a televised Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. He asserted presidential authority to deploy forces for South Vietnam while Morse and Lausche clashed over the administration's position. The session occurred amid talks on Johnsons foreign aid request and regional turmoil, with Ky’s remarks triggering further controversy.
